4.3 Assessing Learning in the CLIL Classroom

Assessment in a CLIL classroom should be a natural and supportive part of the learning process rather than a source of stress. Especially with younger learners, traditional testing methods may not accurately reflect students’ abilities and can create unnecessary pressure. Instead, assessment should focus on helping learners feel confident and motivated as they develop both language and content knowledge.

In this chapter, we explore how to assess learning in a continuous and informal way. We look at strategies such as observation, simple questioning, and short, manageable tasks that allow students to demonstrate their understanding during everyday classroom activities. The aim is to shift the focus from correcting mistakes to recognising progress, making assessment a positive, integrated part of learning that supports confidence and growth.
