3.1 Why Fun Matters: Play and Learning in CLIL
Children learn more effectively when they are engaged and enjoying the learning process. In a CLIL classroom, this is especially important, as students are developing both content knowledge and language skills at the same time. When learning is playful, active, and meaningful, learners are not only more motivated, but they also build confidence and develop important cognitive and social skills.
In this chapter, we explore why fun is not an extra element, but a fundamental part of effective learning. We look at how play, movement, music, and creativity support language development, reinforce content understanding, and create a positive learning environment. The aim is to help you design lessons that students look forward to — where learning becomes an active, enjoyable experience that encourages participation, confidence, and long-term engagement.
