1.1 Understanding Your Learners: Age and Ability Level

When planning a CLIL lesson, considering your students’ age and ability level may seem obvious — but it is actually fundamental. As introduced in the previous section, effective topic selection depends on understanding what learners can realistically manage. In primary school, differences in cognitive development, language skills, and exposure to the second language can be significant, not only between age groups but also within the same class.

In this chapter, we take a closer look at this first key element and explore why CLIL planning should not be based simply on age or grade, but on students’ actual abilities. We will focus on factors such as reading and writing skills, attention span, motor abilities, and familiarity with the second language. We also introduce differentiation as a practical strategy to respond to mixed-ability classrooms and support all learners effectively.
