1.2 Selecting the Right Subject for CLIL

Once you’ve considered your students’ age and ability level, the next key decision is the subject you want to teach through CLIL. While it may seem that any subject can work, some are naturally easier to adapt to a primary CLIL context than others, especially when learners are still developing both cognitively and linguistically.

In this chapter, we explore how different subject areas influence language demands and lesson complexity. We will look at why some subjects, such as art, geography, or science, tend to be more CLIL‑friendly, while others may require more careful planning and simplification. We will also consider how to choose a subject that can be made visual, interactive, and accessible, so that it supports both content learning and language development without overwhelming your students.
