4.2 Understanding and Integrating the Four Skills

In CLIL teaching, it is important to look beyond individual words or activities and consider how language is used as a whole. Effective learning happens when students engage with language in different ways — by listening, speaking, reading, and writing. These skills do not work in isolation, but support and reinforce each other, creating a richer and more balanced learning experience.

In this chapter, we explore the role of each of the four skills and how they contribute to language development. We look at how listening and speaking provide a natural starting point, while reading and writing allow learners to reflect, consolidate, and deepen their understanding. The aim is to help you see the four skills as interconnected elements that should be developed progressively and regularly, supporting students in becoming confident and effective communicators over time.
