4.1 Balancing the Four Skills in CLIL Lessons

Integrating the four language skills into a CLIL lesson requires careful balance. While listening, speaking, reading, and writing all play an important role, they should not be introduced all at once without consideration for learners’ age and level. Especially in primary education, it is essential to ensure that students are supported and not overwhelmed.

In this chapter, we focus on how to combine the four skills in a balanced and effective way. We explore the importance of selecting activities that are neither too easy nor too difficult, but appropriately challenging and achievable. The aim is to help you design tasks that motivate students, support their progress, and allow them to experience success, building confidence step by step as they develop both language and content knowledge.
