2.4 Simplifying Materials for Effective CLIL Teaching
Adapting materials for CLIL is not only about selecting the right content — it is about making it understandable. One of the most important principles in this process is simplification. When teaching through a second language, even well-chosen materials can become ineffective if the language, instructions, or tasks are too complex for learners.
In this chapter, we focus on practical strategies for simplifying materials while maintaining meaningful learning. We explore how to use clear and familiar language, give short and structured instructions, and support understanding through visuals, gestures, and modelling. We also highlight the importance of checking comprehension and building consistent classroom routines. The goal is not to reduce the quality of the content, but to make it accessible, manageable, and engaging for all learners.
