4.1 Formative and Summative Assessment

Two kinds of assessment, two different jobs. Formative assessment happens during the project: it guides students, helps them improve and catches problems early. Summative assessment comes at the end: it recognises what students have achieved and celebrates their work.

This lesson explains how the two work together, using the example of a podcast project. Along the way, students get feedback on their research, on their script and during a rehearsal. At the end, the final podcast is assessed with a rubric and presented to a real audience.

You need both, and in PBL they’re a team!
