Been on a Europass course in person? This course comes with it.

A self-paced course for teachers of all subjects who want to teach the European Union through active methods: the 4Cs, task- and project-based learning, motivating warm-ups and collaborative strategies, with EU-themed examples and resources for your lesson plans.

What you will learn

  • Understand the 4Cs (communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking) and use them to structure student-centred lesson plans on EU topics
  • Tell task-based and project-based learning apart, and design tasks and projects that help students explore the EU
  • Keep motivation high with warm-up activities that build the values and skills of European democratic culture
  • Compare active and collaborative learning, and add inquiry-, problem- and place-based learning to your teaching strategies

Understanding how the European Union works helps students make sense of complex issues such as migration and climate change, and grow into conscious European citizens. In class, however, the EU can easily feel abstract. Student-centred and collaborative methods change that: they give students ownership of their learning, ask them to work together towards a shared goal and turn EU content into tasks, projects and discussions.

This course shows you how. Each topic defines one or more approaches, compares them and suggests activities and resources on EU topics, from the 4Cs and lesson planning to TBL and PBL, warm-ups on democratic culture and further strategies such as inquiry-, problem- and place-based learning. A case study on the workshops of the Historical Archives of the European Union shows active and collaborative learning in practice. By the end, you will have a full set of strategies to choose from, depending on your students and your context.
