An introduction to inclusive education for teachers of all subjects and levels: the key concepts behind inclusion, the barriers students face, and practical ways to make your classroom welcoming for everyone.

What you will learn

  • Tell apart inclusion, diversity, equality and equity, and see why the difference matters in class
  • Understand how exclusion, marginalisation, integration and inclusion differ, and what each means for your students
  • Recognise the barriers that stop students from taking part, using the Pyramid of Barriers
  • Bring diversity into everyday teaching with ready-to-use activities, from identity collages to designing an inclusive classroom with LEGO bricks

Inclusion is often described as a goal, but in schools it works as a process: a way of looking at every student, their abilities and their needs, and adapting the learning environment so that everyone can take part. It concerns all students, not only those with special educational needs, and it starts with a clear understanding of a few key ideas.

This course builds that understanding step by step. You will explore what inclusion, diversity and equity really mean, with tools such as the Diversity Wheel and the Identity Iceberg, then look at the values of inclusive education and the barriers that hold students back. Along the way, practical activities show how to bring these ideas into your classroom and talk about diversity with your students in a safe, respectful way.
