Been on a Europass course in person? This course comes with it.

An introduction to three approaches that shaped early childhood education, for teachers who want to understand their principles and bring some of their ideas into everyday practice.

What you will learn

  • Understand the key ideas of the Montessori Method, from the absorbent mind and sensitive periods to self-direction and concentration
  • Recognise the role of the prepared environment, the materials and the teacher in a Montessori classroom, and the challenges of applying the method today
  • Explore the Reggio Emilia approach: the child as protagonist, the hundred languages, the atelier and the “three teachers”
  • Discover the Agazzi sisters’ home-like vision of preschool, and choose the ideas from all three approaches that suit your setting

Montessori, Reggio Emilia and the Agazzi sisters all put the child at the centre of learning, each in its own way. Montessori offers a precise method built on scientific observation and a carefully prepared environment; Reggio Emilia is a flexible approach that grows out of relationships, community and documentation; the Agazzi sisters imagined a warm, home-like preschool rooted in everyday life. Together they shaped early childhood education in Italy and far beyond.

This course explains the principles behind each approach, compares them and looks honestly at their limits and at what it takes to apply them in today’s schools. It will not train you to run a Montessori or Reggio Emilia school, but it will give you a clear understanding of the three approaches and practical ideas you can adapt to your own classroom.
