Been on a Europass course in person? This course comes with it.

A self-paced course for subject and language teachers who want to put CLIL into practice: the key principles of the approach and nine sample activities on the European Union and its six founding countries, each with handouts ready to use in class.

What you will learn

  • Understand the principles behind CLIL, including the 4Cs (content, communication, cognition and culture), and what a student-centred CLIL lesson requires
  • Recognise the most common challenges and structure CLIL activities that develop reading, writing, listening and speaking
  • Use authentic materials, from EU symbols and institutions to a film trailer and a famous painting, to combine content and language
  • Adapt nine ready-to-use activities, such as jigsaw reading, sequencing, problem solving and pre-scripted roleplay, to your own subject, class and language level

CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) brings subject teaching and language learning together: students learn about a topic through a foreign language, and the topic gives them something real to read, write and talk about. It works for language teachers who want richer content and for subject teachers who teach in a second language, but it only succeeds with well-designed activities.

This course starts with the principles of CLIL and then moves straight into practice. Through nine sample activities on the European Union and its six founding members, Germany, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Italy and the Netherlands, you will see how different methods can turn European history, geography, culture and current affairs into engaging lessons. Each activity comes with a handout for students and an activity form for teachers, with timing, school and language level, the skills practised and step-by-step instructions, so you can use it as it is or adapt it for your own class.

The course is organised in five topics. The first introduces the key ideas of CLIL and ends with a short interactive quiz. The other four each present two or three sample activities: every activity is explained step by step and followed by a worksheet with an activity form for teachers and a handout for students, and each topic closes with questions for reflection. After the first two topics, you can explore the activities in any order.
